Horizon
EU’s popular science magazine
From 2018 to 2021, I created videos and data visualizations for Horizon, the EU Research and Innovation Magazine, turning web articles into fully visual, shareable stories.
Horizon was published by ICF Next on behalf of the European Commission DG Research and Innovation. I was part of a team operating as a newsroom. In this environment, I honed my skills and discovered a passion for helping readers make sense of science news and the world we live in.
I was tasked with researching and pitching data viz and video stories, researching and analyzing data, briefing graphic designers, writing scripts, sourcing footage, and editing videos, as well as prepping and interviewing researchers to include in our longer formats.
Within a year our videos got so successful, the rate of production doubled, and I started and led a team of freelance and in-house video editors and producers. By the end of 2020, our videos had received just shy of 10 million views across all digital channels.
Horizon had over 200k page views, 800k video views, and 140k interactions on social media per month. Our stories were regularly republished by big media brands like El País.
